KINGSTON, Jamaica – The drama, the twists, the turns, lead changing from race day to race day, delving into the claiming market like never before, and placing horses in claiming who would normally stay in the stables, are all part of the mystique of a down to the wire race for the trainers’ championship.

Going into the last race day of 2021, champion Anthony Nunes after being way behind conjured the magic, along with the racing tact necessary over two race days (Thursday, December 23 and Sunday, December 26) with seven winners, three and then four respectively, to vault himself in the lead over rival Jason DaCosta.

Those seven winners included Further and Beyond in the big purse Ian Levy Cup earning just over $2 million.

On the last race day, which is today (Monday< December 27), Nunes leads DaCosta by just over $1.2 million, leaving the latter with all to do if he is to win his first championship in his first year of training locally. Remember also that DaCosta only started training locally at the end of April.

It is not impossible for DaCosta to win the title especially with two big races on offer today, the $4 million Jamaica Two-Year-Old Stakes and the $2 million Chris Armond Sprint.

While there is a possibility of DaCosta earning enough to win the title everything has to go right, while Nunes with his lead has enough firepower on paper to sit on the trainers’ throne for another year.

Let’s wait and see, there might be more draw in-store.
