Can Dane Nelson make the difference on Oneofakind?
KINGSTON, Jamaica - Last year's Jamaica St Leger and Derby winner Calculus and arch-rival Oneofakind lock horns once again in what is anticipated to be another fierce showdown this time in the Chairman's Trophy feature at Caymanas Park on Saturday, March 19, 2002.
The Chairman’s Trophy is an Open Allowance/Graded Stakes contest for three-year-old and upwards going the distance of 7 ½ furlongs (1,500m) for a total purse of $1.5 million.
Calculus and Oneofakind have met two times this season already with Calculus winning both clashes. Calculus won the Alexander Hamilton Trophy by a head-on January 29 over one mile and then the Miracle Man Cup over 9 ½ furlongs by a length on February 26.
Calculus should not find this trip short as he won the Gold Cup last year over 7 furlongs, beating Horse of the Year Further and Beyond. Despite carrying top weight of 57.0 kgs (126 lb), Calculus, who will again have the services of Shane Ellis, could make it three wins in a row.
However, it is not going to be an easy task for Calculus as Oneofakind is reported to be pumped up and ready to go, especially with Dane Nelson returning to the saddle.
Oneofakind has been training well coming into this race and with the distance, not an issue, this hard-knocking horse could turn the tables on Calculus
The race is pretty much limited to these two runners as the other four starters in the line-up don't have the class and the talent to take down neither Calculus nor Oneofakind for top honours.
Awesome Treasure, having finished some 11 3/4 lengths behind the top two on last, is not expected to be any closer.
Sparkle Diamond has some talent but should not impact the outcome.
Duke is a capable runner who can, on his day, run these close, while Secret Identity, who has just made it to this grouping, is not ready to take on these as yet.
