KINGSTON, Jamaica - In a thrilling conclusion to the 2024 Mouttet Mile, the dust may still be churning after the triumph of Funcaandun, but it’s time to shine a spotlight on the achievement by Further And Beyond.
This six-year-old chestnut horse, sired by Blue Pepsi Lodge and out of Rumble, was the first locally bred horse to finish in the prestigious event. .
With odds stacked against him at a staggering 98-1, Further And Beyond, owned by Vickram Oditt and expertly trained by Donovan Hutchinson, ran an astonishing race under the skilled guidance of jockey Aaron Chatrie. The devoted racing crowd witnessed Further And Beyond battling fiercely in the final furlong and a half, crossing the line in an impressive fourth place, just three lengths behind the victorious Funcaandun.
The race podium was dominated by United States-bred competitors, with Legacy Isle and Commandant taking second and third place, respectively.
Further And Beyond’s achievement not only earned his connections $1.9 million, but under the rules of racing in Jamaica, the breeders' bonus is paid out to the first local bred horse to finish in a race.
Further And Beyond’s breeders were awarded with a payout of $1.2 million.
Further And Beyond wasn’t alone as a local bred in the race, with four other local bred horses lining up at the start. Rhythm Buzz followed Further And Beyond in ninth place, while Atomica, Intrestntimesahead, and Banadura finished tenth, eleventh, and sixteenth, respectively.
However, it was Further And Beyond who captured the hearts of the spectators.
