Golden Wattle gives Anthony Nunes his 3rd trainers’ title
KINGSTON, Jamaica – Golden Wattle, a two-year-old chestnut filly by Lion Tamer out of Golden Glory, in a commanding display under superb guidance by Tevin Foster won the one mile Jamaica Two-Year-Old Stakes in scintillating fashion.
In doing so, Golden Wattle added the hefty sum of $2,160,000 to the coffers of her trainer Anthony Nunes to seal the 2021 trainers’ crown, after a valiant attempt by Jason DaCosta.
Racing at odds of 11-1, Foster kept the filly off the pace as Dezzi (Javaniel Patterson) and Power Ranking (Oshane Nugent) set the early splits with Perfect Brew (Robert Halledeen) following. The order remained much the same down the backstretch but going around the half-mile turn Brinks (Omar Walker) started to get closer. Entering the straight it was Brinks, Perfect Bew and Dezzi fighting it out and then after waiting, and waiting, Foster brought Golden Wattle forward and the filly responded in championship fashion to win by two lengths in a time of 1:40.0.
Second went to Perfect Brew with Brinks third.
Golden Wattle thus became the first of the 2021 juvenile cohort (colts, geldings and fillies) to win three races during the season. Golden Wattle was the first filly to win this one-mile race since Princesspopstar in 2013.
For Nunes it was his fourth victory in the last eight years in this event and his second in succession.
