KINGSTON, Jamaica - Run Thatcher Run’s race to be an effective part of the field for the 2000 Guineas on Sunday, April 14 takes another step in that direction, as after just seven days of rest, he is now pitted against a fearsome field over 7 ½ furlongs (1,500 metres) in Overnight Allowance company tomorrow.
The champion local two-year-old of last year did well in his seasonal bow to win over six furlongs but now he faces seasoned, tough and talented rivals who are going to test him to the bone in his first outing in the class.
The three-year-old chestnut colt enters the cauldron of Overnight carrying 115 lb, the lightest weight he has ever been required to tote.
Yet, despite this obvious weight assistance, Run Thatcher Run will find the likes of Master of Hall, stable companions Dysfunctional and Uncle Frank, Lici’s Pepsi, foreigners My Elle Belle and Saratoga Sight, extremely difficult to deal with.
Run Thatcher Run can win this one as he is talented but to do so against his main foes, he has to show significant improvement and even with that improvement, every stride he makes after the gates open must be perfect. Simply put, his rider Omar Walker cannot err for not even a nanosecond.
Master of Hall is coming to the class for the first time on the back of three straight wins. Like Run Thatcher Run, Master of Hall has had injury issues but the distance of this race gives him a great chance. If, fit and ready Master of Hall has more than just a fighting chance.
Dysfunctional and Uncle Frank are on the rebound with the former signalling his readiness with a good fifth place just 4 ½ lengths behind Ras Emanuel after a long period of racing inactivity.
Of the two foreigners, the Gary Subratie trained Saratoga Sight drops down a notch to compete here and with his known ability to do the best of his running in the latter stages of any race, he is going to be very difficult to deal with even with 122 lb in his back. Remember that it was just 24 days ago that Saratoga Sight finished 5 ¾ lengths behind another gifted foreigner, Stranger Danger.
While, My Elle Belle although somewhat disappointing can come to the fore when she wants to so.
Lici’s Pepsi has been fairly consistent and has been running in the class quite often of late. This alone gives her a good shot of winning.
Then there is the champion two-year-old of 2016, Sotomayor, making a return to competitive racing after a break of 140 days. He can produce when he wants to nut may just need time to find his bearings.
For sure, Run Thatcher Run is seeking to be at his best when the 2000 Guineas arrives and this Overnight event is going to answer a lot of questions about his readiness for the season’s first colts and geldings’ Classic race.
Interesting times are ahead.
