KINGSTON, Jamaica - Despite a spirited win by Father Patrick in the $1.15 million St Catherine Cup feature, third-generation trainer Steven Todd took the spotlight by saddling his 200th career winner on the 10-race programme at Caymanas Park yesterday (January 16, 2021).
Starting the day on 198 winners, Todd moved one closer to his milestone when Papa Albert won the opening event over six furlongs. Ridden by Linton Steadman, Papa Albert won by 6 lengths to make it 199 wins for Todd.
The landmark for Todd came in the fifth race when he again teamed up with Steadman to win with Boasy N Flashy over five furlongs (1000m) straight. Boasy N Flashy won easily by 4 ¼ lengths in a time of 1:01.3.
Todd then saddled his third winner on the day when Awesome Choice (Anthony Thomas) won the seventh race over six furlongs.
The three-year-old by filly won by three parts of a length in a time of 1:15.0 to give Todd win number 201 of his career.
Father Patrick, trained by Ian Parsard and ridden by Oshane Nugent, in another noticeable display of come from behind sprinting, ran rivals into the ground to take the Open Allowance event by a length and a quarter in a time of 1:12.0. Duke (Robert Halledeen) came on strong towards the end of the race to get second place with Universal Boss (Omar Walker) finishing third.
Nugent had earlier won aboard Parajet for trainer Ryan Darby in the fourth race over three furlongs (600m) straight for a double.
