The third race on Saturday, October 17, 2026, is being staged in honour of Errol “Big Sub’ Subratie.

The Errol “Big Sub’ Subratie Memorial Trophy is for three-year-old and up horses at the Overnight Allowance level going eight furlongs.

Eight horses are entered to compete, with The Quick Galloper’s take on the final outcome published below for the perusal of readers.

1 – OIL MACHINE

A fixture on the circuit who routinely transitions between top-flight claiming company and Overnight Allowance. He last visited the winner's enclosure on August 29 after a sharp performance over six and a half furlongs, but his subsequent two appearances in Overnight Allowance saw him finish well behind the leaders. Nevertheless, Oil Machine is in form and rarely fails to put himself into the mix. Given his persistence and endurance, he remains a candidate who must be treated with respect.

2 – NEBUCHADNEZZAR

Has put together a solid career to reach this grade, bringing a record of four victories from 29 starts. His maiden attempt in Overnight Allowance was a tough assignment, leaving him well behind his talented stablemate Of A Revolution. While the step up in class presents a learning curve, he has shown steady progress over time and will eventually make his mark at this level.

3 – CALIFORNIA GOLD

Has made multiple trips to the post in this category without making a meaningful impression on the board. Current form gives little reason to anticipate a sudden turnaround in performance. Others look far more compelling.

4 – WHIZZ KID

Delivered a striking late-closing performance to score over the mile distance on August 29, though he failed to follow up that effort when finishing out of contention over nine furlongs and 25 yards on September 19. An honest and genuine campaigner, he will appreciate reverting to the eight-furlong journey. With connections opting to switch gear, removing the visor in favour of blinkers, he looks primed for a bounce-back effort and demands serious attention.

5 – GALLANT GROOM

Boasts an efficient record of two wins from just three career starts. He was forced to dig deep into his reserves to turn back a tenacious challenge from stablemate Eye of the Tiger last time out, leaving open the question of how much headroom he has left. This call will offer clear answers regarding his true potential.

6 – SLAM SHARP

Makes his debut appearance in Overnight Allowance. Taking on seasoned company at this trip is a high bar, and he looks in need of additional time and race experience before he can prove competitive here.

7 – KING PIYE

Has found the transition to Overnight Allowance challenging, struggling to make an impact while running against more seasoned, proven competitors. Her connections have equipped her with a tongue tie in hopes of improving her effort, though she will need a dramatic step forward to figure in the outcome.

8 – NEO STAR

The battle-tested veteran of the field, holding a resume of eight wins from 36 lifetime starts. Although his recent race record appears underwhelming, that is largely a reflection of the high-calibre opposition he has faced lately. Possessing tactical versatility, he is equally comfortable setting the pace or coming from off the tempo. A dangerous contender who could easily turn back the clock in this spot.
