The Jamaica Racing Commission wishes to remind all persons intending to import geldings for racing in Jamaica of the provisions and requirements applicable under Rule 109 of the Jamaica Racing Commission Racing Rules, 1977.
In accordance with Rule 109, the Commission may permit the importation of a maximum of ten (10) geldings per calendar year for racing purposes. To ensure proper monitoring, compliance, and orderly administration of the process, prior written approval must be obtained from the from the Board of Commissioners before any gelding is purchased or imported into Jamaica.
Requirements for Approval
Persons wishing to purchase and import a gelding must submit the following documentation for consideration:
- Application for importation
A formal written request must be submitted to the Commission seeking permission to import any gelding intended for racing.
- Proof of Purchase
Following the Commission’s approval to import a gelding, proof of purchase must be submitted to the Commission within three (3) weeks of the date of approval. Acceptable documentation may include an official purchase agreement, bill of sale, or other documentation confirming the ownership by the applicant.
- Veterinary/Quarantine Documentation
Within 30 days of the date of approval provided by the Commission, the applicant is to provide a copy of the application for a Veterinary Import Permit as provided by the MOA Trade system of the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Mining, Jamaica. The application number and designation of the horse as a gelding must be clearly stated on the application.
Documents outlined at 1-3 above must be submitted to the Commission before the animal is counted against the annual allocation of ten (10) geldings permitted for importation into Jamaica.
Approval to import a gelding is not automatic and remains subject to the Commission’s consideration, the approval of the Board of Commissioners, and the availability of a place within the annual allocation of ten (10) geldings.
Persons are therefore strongly advised not to purchase or make arrangements to ship any gelding to Jamaica without first obtaining the required written approval from the Commission. Failure to obtain approval may result in the horse not being eligible for registration or participation in racing in Jamaica.
