As the 2026 two-year-old racing season gathers some amount of steam, Sooryavanshi, named after the rising Indian cricket sensation, validated her early promise with victory in a four-furlong Maiden Special Weight contest.
Sooryavanshi was among the earliest juveniles to hit the track this season on August 8, where she debuted with a solid second-place effort over three furlongs, finishing 2 ½ lengths behind the victorious Boss Over Boss.
Building on the invaluable lessons of her debut, the chestnut filly by Successful Native out of Coco Chanel, conditioned by trainer Anthony Nunes and partnered by champion jockey Raddesh Roman, elevated her game to secure her maiden trip to the winner's circle.
Facing four opponents after the late scratch of her stablemate Yeet, Roman broke his mount cleanly from the gates and pushed straight to the front. Sooryavanshi set the tempo throughout, posting an opening quarter-mile fraction of 24.1 seconds before stopping the clock in a final time of 48.2 seconds, crossing the line 1 ¾ lengths clear, with another 7 ¾ lengths back to third.
First-time starter Luna Eclipse finished determinedly in second, closing noticeable distance down the homestretch. The Robert Pearson trainee, guided by Omar Walker, looks like a promising contender to monitor in upcoming starts. Fellow debutant Awhodat, under jockey Robert Halledeen, rounded out the top three.
All three two-year-old contests staged in 2026 so far have been claimed by the premier duo of Jason DaCosta and Nunes. DaCosta captured the August 8 opener with Boss Over Boss before landing the second juvenile fixture with imported runner, Birthday King, while Nunes secured the third with Sooryavanshi.
The next event on the two-year-old calendar is slated for Saturday, September 26.
