While Sunday, June 7, 2026, was highlighted by the three-year-old colts and geldings contesting the Classic 2000 Guineas, the day also carried personal significance for jockey Phillip Parchment, who celebrated his 200th career victory.
Parchment reached the milestone aboard the Donovan Plummer-trained Dark Matter, a fitting achievement on one of the sport’s most prestigious race days.
“It is a great feeling. It is very magnificent,” Parchment said, still clad in his silks after dismounting. “I have been hunting this 200th win for about four weeks now, and it finally came on a big day, the 2000 Guineas race day.”
Reflecting on the journey, Parchment emphasised the importance of opportunity and perseverance. “You know, you have to get the rides to get the job done. If you are not getting the good horses, you are not going to win. I have been working hard in the mornings. I knew that it would come, but I just had to stay focused and keep on working,” he explained.
FROM LEAN APPRENTICE YEARS TO ESTABLISHED SUCCESS
Parchment began his riding career in 2002. His apprenticeship years were modest, yielding 28 wins before he stepped away and later returned to the saddle. Since then, he has amassed 172 victories as a full-fledged jockey, bringing his overall tally to 200.
DEFINING RIDES
Asked to recall his finest moment in the saddle, Parchment did not hesitate. “My best ride was my Jamaica Derby win aboard King Arthur for the late Wayne DaCosta,” he declared.
His résumé also includes triumphs in the Jamaica Two-Year-Old Stakes, the Jamaica Oaks, and the Jamaica Guineas, but the Derby remains the pinnacle. “Overall, the Jamaica Derby was my best one,” he said with conviction.
