Irad Ortiz Jr. was transported to Aventura Hospital on Thursday after a fall in the fifth race at Gulfstream Park.

Ortiz was aboard first-time starter A Moment a Love, trained by Carlos David, in a five-furlong maiden optional claimer on the turf. The horse ducked sharply inward shortly after the break, crashing through the inner rail and unseating the rider. Ortiz hit the ground hard as his mount galloped riderless along the inner turf course before the horse walked off.

The jockey was conscious and alert at the scene but reported pain in his hip. He was taken to the hospital for evaluation.

Stewards launched an inquiry into the start but took no action.

The race continued without further incident. Viking Quest, ridden by John Velazquez, prompted the pace two wide, seized command in mid-stretch and held off Elenique for the victory.
