The seventh race on Valentine’s Day brings together locally bred four-year-olds and upward (non-winners of three), alongside foreign-bred four-year-olds and upward (non-winners of two).
Six locally bred horses are entered for this mile-long contest.
Below is The Quick Galloper’s analysis of each runner, presented in draw order.
1 – CUTOUT
Cutout has proven a model of consistency in most of her last eight outings. She steps into the non-three category for the first time, following a convincing victory on January 24 over seven furlongs, where she led for much of the journey. The runner-up that day, Feeling Free, has since returned to win, confirming the strength of the form. Cutout is the one they will all have to catch.
2 – LOCKDOWN
A familiar face in this grouping, Lockdown has been a steady performer, regularly hitting the board. Well accustomed to the non-three class and comfortable at a mile, Lockdown cannot be overlooked.
3 – JOYFULL SURPRISE
A recent addition to the non-three ranks. Still finding footing at this level and likely to need more time.
4 – PRETTY BROWN TING
Struggled when moving up to non-three, finishing sixth and well behind the winner. However, Pretty Brown Ting is a genuine runner who thrives off a strong pace, which could play to her advantage here.
5 – STAR QUEST
After early struggles in non-three, Star Quest has begun to show signs of improvement. Prefers to dictate terms but is more effective over shorter trips. Still, capable of staying off the pace if required, and rates a strong contender.
6 – BRAHMA BULL
Has failed to make an impression in two attempts at this level. Likely to need more time before showing his true ability among non-three company.
THE QUICK GALLOPER’S VERDICT
Cutout enters this race in peak form and is expected to set the tempo once again. Star Quest looms as the main danger, with Lockdown a consistent threat. Pretty Brown Ting could sneak into contention if the pace unfolds to suit. Brahma Bull and Joyfull Surprise appear to be longer-term projects.
