The 2026 New Year’s Day Trophy event (race #3) is for locally bred four-year-old and up horses (non-winners of two races) and imported four-year-olds and up maidens.

Six horses are entered to compete over 6 ½ furlongs.

The Quick Galloper’s take on the possible outcome is provided below.

1 – PAPI USO

On his 21st attempt, Papi Uso finally shed the maiden tag on December 20. Entering the non-two ranks for the first time, he must prove himself further before being considered a genuine winning threat.

2 – SHEER DE JOUR

This five-year-old mare is a seasoned campaigner in non-winners of two. In her last six outings, Sheer De Jour has been a model of consistency, always finishing in the top four. With the apprentice rider reducing her impost by four kilogrammes, her chances of breaking through for a win are significantly boosted.

3 – THOUSAND TREASURES

The US-bred Thousand Treasures has made 15 attempts without success. His recent form offers little encouragement, though he did finish third in a claiming race over the five straight course last time out. In a wide-open contest, Thousand Treasures could finally seize the opportunity to break his maiden.

4 – SLAM SHARP

Declared a late non-starter.

5 – MIDNIGHT RUNNER

This four-year-old roan colt has been a fixture at this level, occasionally hitting the board. Just six days ago, he finished third over a mile, 4 ¾ lengths behind Pretty Brown Ting. The shorter 6 ½ furlongs suits him better, and with visor and tongue tie applied, Midnight Runner has a strong chance of securing his second career win.

6 – CHOO BLUE

This bay filly showed promise in her second non-winners of two attempt, finishing fourth, 6 ¾ lengths behind Pretty Brown Ting. She is expected to be competitive and could influence the final outcome.

THE GALLOPER’S VERDICT

With Slam Sharp withdrawn, the race narrows to five contenders. Midnight Runner appears best suited to the distance and equipment changes, making him the one to beat. Sheer De Jour’s consistency and weight allowance put her firmly in contention, while Thousand Treasures lurks as a possible winner if he finally delivers. Choo Blue should not be overlooked for a placing, and Papi Uso may need more time to adjust at this level.

Top Pick: Midnight Runner

Main Dangers: Sheer De Jour and Thousand Treasures
