KINGSTON, Jamaica – This event is dedicated to the memory of Distinctly Irish, a past Gold Cup winner whose name still resonates with racing fans across the island.
The race is restricted to locally bred four-year-olds and upward who are non-winners of three races, and foreign-bred four-year-olds and upward who are non-winners of two.
Seven runners will face the starter over 7½ furlongs.
1 – BUSHFIRE
A chestnut colt whose recent form has been underwhelming, Bushfire enters this contest with little to recommend. Despite equipment changes, removing the visor and adding blinkers there’s no indication that these adjustments will spark a turnaround. His last few outings have been marked by sluggish starts and a lack of finishing kick. Unless something dramatic changes, Bushfire is likely to remain off the board.
2 – CROWN CHASER
A horse with a notable past, Crown Chaser etched his name into the record books with a victory in the 2024 Jamaica Derby. However, since that high point, his form has dipped, and he’s yet to find the winner’s enclosure in 2025 after three attempts. Rumours of lingering physical issues have circulated, and his performances suggest he’s not operating at full capacity. Still, even at 75 per cent, Crown Chaser possesses enough class to dominate this field. If he’s anywhere near his best, expect a commanding run.
3 – HIMAYA
Himaya has been a consistent presence in the mid-tier ranks but has struggled to assert dominance, especially when facing rivals like Wicked Cassie. His running style, settling early and making a late move has its merits, but the timing has often been off. In this lineup, Himaya is likely to be seen making ground in the final furlong, but the leaders may already be out of reach. A minor placing is his most realistic outcome.
4 – WICKED CASSIE
One of the most reliable performers in recent months at this level, Wicked Cassie has built a reputation for consistency and grit. Her preferred tactic is to settle mid-pack and then a strong rally in the stretch, a style well-suited to the 7½ furlong trip. With an in-form apprentice aboard, she gets a valuable weight allowance, which could make all the difference. Expect her to be in the thick of things when the race hits its peak. A live contender with genuine winning claims.
5 – MONSTER VIGOROUS
Monster Vigorous broke through for her second career win just twenty days ago. Now stepping into the non-three category, she faces a sterner test. While she may not yet be ready to dominate this class, her recent win suggests upward momentum. If she can replicate that effort, she’s a strong candidate for a spot on the board.
6 – PRINCESS CATALEYA
Princess Cataleya has not shown the kind of form or progression needed to be competitive at this level. Connections may be hoping for a surprise, but based on all available evidence, she can be safely ruled out of serious contention.
7 – HIT N RUN
A speedster by nature, Hit N Run is known for her early fractions, often leading the field through the first three furlongs. However, her stamina has repeatedly come into question, as she tends to retreat once the pressure mounts. Over 7½ furlongs, she’ll likely set the early tempo but will need a dramatic improvement in staying power to hold off the closers. A bold showing is possible, but the fade is almost inevitable.
THE QUICK GALLOPER’S VERDICT
Crown Chaser, even below peak fitness, holds the class edge and should be respected. Wicked Cassie brings consistency and tactical strength, making her a serious threat. Himaya and Monster Vigorous are best suited for minor honours, while Bushfire, Princess Cataleya, and Hit N Run will need significant improvement to factor.
