KINGSTON, Jamaica – Now there is absolutely no doubt. This horse by the name of Mahogany is from the top draw, the very top.
In a display of ruthlessness, Mahogany, a three-year-old chestnut colt by Sensational Slam – Mete-Orite trained by Ian Parsard and ridden by Dane Dawkins completely demolished a field made-up mainly of foreigners winning by an expanding 6 ½ lengths in a fast time of 1:31.2 for 7 ½ furlongs. The race won by Mahogany came in a Restricted Stakes for three-year-olds and upwards.
When the starter let them go, Sir Alton was a touch slowly out but Omar Walker on board pushed him through on the rails. Sir Alton was quickly joined by Mahogany but after three furlongs were completed, Mahogany took over and it was a struggle thereafter for the five other runners in the contest.
Mahogany was comfortable while recording a split clocking of 1:10.0 for six furlongs. The final splits were 23.3 x 45.4 x 1:10.0.
A tired and flagging Sir Alton was second with Uncle Polly third. The 3-5 odds-on favourite Crafty and Ready was a complete no-show in the event.
Mahogany closed a spanking triple for trainer Parsard.
Mahogany was bred by Clovis Metcalfe.
