Juvenile Test Includes Foreign-Breds – 6 Face Off At 3 Furlongs

TWO-YEAR-OLD

The second two-year-old contest of the 2025 season is set for Saturday, August 23, and brings a notable shift in eligibility.

Unlike the first juvenile call, this event opens the gate to foreign-breds, allowing them to compete directly against locally bred horses.

Of the six nominated, five hail from the United States.

Below, The Quick Galloper offers its analysis of the six contenders, drawn in gate order, for this sharp three-furlong sprint.

1 – COMUNA TRECE

Bay colt (USA – May 28) by Maximum Security out of My Anguilla Trainer: Jason DaCosta | Jockey: Clive Lynch

Comuna Trece has been a consistent presence during morning exercise sessions, showing steady development. However, in his final prep gallop on August 17, he trailed significantly behind stablemate Novio over five furlongs straight. While the pedigree suggests potential, the colt’s performance in that key workout raises questions about his readiness. A cautious approach is warranted for this debutant.

 2 – BRODY’S UNITY

Bay colt (USA – February 15) by Brody’s Clause out of Bagatelle Park Trainer: Norman Smith | Jockey: Michael Semple

Little is known about Brody’s Unity’s morning routines, as exercise reports have been scarce. With limited data to assess his condition or progression, this colt enters the fray under a veil of uncertainty. His debut will serve as a litmus test, and observers will be watching closely to determine if he belongs among the competitive ranks.

 3 – NOVIO

Chestnut colt (USA – March 3) by Golden Cents out of Ol Sanish Trainer: Jason DaCosta | Jockey: Robert Halledeen

Novio stands out as one of the seasoned of the group, having logged four timed gallops—all over the straight course. His latest effort on August 17 was 1:02.0 over five furlongs, signaling fitness and intent. With a proven work pattern and a strong final breeze, Novio enters this race as the likely frontrunner. Expect a bold showing from this well-prepared colt.

4 – INFINITY STAR

Bay filly (USA – by Green Point Crusader out of Unknown) Trainer: Winchester McIntosh | Jockey: Chalrick Budhai

Infinity Star has put in the groundwork, with at least five gallops under her belt. Her five-furlong clocking of 1:10.2 was followed by a three-furlong breeze in 38.2, suggesting steady but unspectacular progress. While she’s not without promise, the filly may require more time to mature into competitive form. A watch-and-learn approach is advised.

 5 – FERNANDO

Chestnut colt (JAM – February 17) by Successful Native out of Dancing Queen Trainer: Anthony Nunes | Jockey: Raddesh Roman

Fernando carries the flag for local breeding as the lone Jamaican entry in this field. Originally slated to debut on August 2, he was scratched late, leaving his form untested. Facing five American-breds, Fernando’s task is formidable. While his connections remain hopeful, the colt may need additional seasoning before making a serious impact.

 6 – WHATASPUN

Bay colt (USA – March 16) by Spun To Run out of Miss Foo Foo Trainer: Norman Smith | Jockey: Richie Shakes

Whataspun has been active and ambitious in his morning drills, including a notable mile gallop on July 31. His consistent exercise pattern and stamina-building efforts suggest he’s race-ready and eager to compete. Among the newcomers, Whataspun appears well-prepared has to be taken seriously.

THE QUICK GALLOPER’S VERDICT

Novio and Whataspun should be the main challengers to win this one, while Comuna Trece and Brody’s Unity remain question marks. Fernando, the lone local, faces a steep uphill battle, and Infinity Star may need more time to blossom.
