Former champion jockey Shane Garth Ellis, affectionately known across Jamaica and beyond as “The Canter Man”, has received recognition of his contribution to horse racing.
Ellis has been awarded the Badge of Honour for Meritorious Service, in particular, horse racing. This announcement was conveyed in the National Honours’ List published on Independence Day (August 6).
Ellis has played a pivotal role in elevating the stature of horse racing in Jamaica. His legacy is anchored by seven Derby victories, a feat that places him among the most decorated jockeys in the island’s history. His winning Derby mounts, Awesome Power, Typewriter, Orpheus, Relampago, Calculus, Supreme Soul, and Crown Chaser—are now part of racing folklore, each one a chapter in his journey.
Through his triumphs in the Classic races and his consistent mentorship of younger riders, Ellis has helped shape the future of Jamaican horse racing. His name commands respect.
On behalf of Quickgallopja.com and its YouTube Channel, The Quick Galloper, we extend congratulations to Shane Garth Ellis on this well-deserved national honour.
