KINGSTON, Jamaica – With the fillies-only Jamaica Oaks set for Saturday, August 2, this event will showcase 11 starters competing over two turns of ten furlongs.
Below is a breakdown of notable elements from this year's line-up.
– Garvin Harris, is the sole graduate from the December 2024 cohort of the Jockeys’ School to secure a mount in the Oaks. Total Velocity is trained by David Powell. Shane Richardson, another apprentice from an earlier cohort, will ride Cosalivin. Apprentice claims are not applicable in the Oaks.
– Two stallions, Aveenu Malcainu and Sensational Slam, have dual representation among the entrants. Aveenu Malcainu is the sire of Danka (dam: Baby P) and Linguist (dam: Bilingual). Sensational Slam is the sire of Pretty Perfect (dam: Black Bombshell) and Woman In Love (dam: Woman Is Boss).
– Wow Wow is the only locally bred stallion represented in the field. His progeny, Enthusiasm, is out of the mare Noon It Is.
– Shane Ellis leads the jockeys in prior Oaks victories, having won four times: P W’s Choice (1997), Latonia (2004), Saint Cecelia (2009), and Raven Renae (2014).
– Among the participating trainers, Anthony Nunes has secured the most prior wins in the Oaks with four: Exotic Dancer (1995), Latonia (2004), Fayrouz (2018), and Above and Above (2020).
– Ian Parsard and his son Peter-John Parsard both have entries in this year's Oaks. Ian will saddle Roaring Kitty, while Peter-John saddles Woman In Love.
– Pretty Perfect, trained by Gary Subratie, is scheduled to compete in both the Jamaica Oaks and the Jamaica Derby within a span of four days. This dual entry marks the first instance since the revised Classic race sequence was introduced. The former calendar placed the Oaks in April and the Derby in June, whereas the current arrangement runs the Oaks in early August followed by the Derby shortly after.
– None of the eleven horses entered in the Oaks has recorded more than two career victories.
– Total Velocity, trained by David Powell, enters the race as the only maiden in the field.
– Cosalivin has the most racing experience among the entrants with 12 career starts.
– The least experienced horses in terms of starts are Pretty Perfect and Woman In Love, each with four races.
