The adage “weight can stop a train” rang true at Caymanas Park on Saturday, July 12, 2025, as the heavily favoured Legacy Isle succumbed to the burden of top weight, falling victim to a perfectly timed charge by Wall Street Trader in the eighth race.
Toting a hefty 126 pounds, Legacy Isle entered the six-furlong contest as the odds-on favourite, clearly the class of the field on paper. Jockey Raddesh Roman wasted no time, driving the colt to the lead early on. But Legacy Isle’s path was far from smooth—California Crown, under Abigail Able, pressed the pace from the break, forcing a hot tempo.
Further back raced Wall Street Trader, guided by apprentice rider Ramon Nepare, who enjoyed a generous 23-pound weight allowance. While the frontrunners battled through the turn, Nepare kept his cool, conserving energy for a late run.
As the field straightened for the drive, Legacy Isle dispatched California Crown and looked poised to power home. However, the strain of the sustained duel and the top weight began to show. With a furlong and a half remaining, Wall Street Trader, light on weight but loaded with resolve, unleashed a blistering acceleration.
The bay gelding surged past Legacy Isle, capturing the victory by three parts of a length. Trainer Rowan Mathie looked on with pride as his charge claimed a well-earned win, the weight difference playing a pivotal role in the outcome.
Wall Street Trader’s triumph stands as an undeniable impact of weight in sprint racing, weight can always stop a train.

great article quick gallop,as a historian of the sport i saw where in the 90's BLUEMENTHAL carried 133lbs to victory in a 10 furlong race,a very rare feat in the annals of local racing. If i remember correctly the only other horse to do that was the mighty ELEMENT when he first raced in 1971 after squatting in the gates only to win in commanding fashion with his regular rider the late great KENNETH MATHIS
Leĝal light did too 133lb
