KINGSTON, Jamaica - The 2025 edition of the Chairman’s Trophy is set as the eighth race on Saturday, February 22.
This prestigious event is open to horses three years old and up, contested at the Graded Stakes - Open Allowance level, covering a distance of 7 ½ furlongs.
A total of six horses have entered the race, and below is The Quick Galloper’s analysis of each competitor in post-position order.
1 - POWER FROM ABOVE: Outmatched in this trophy event. Power From Above is a filler entry for the race.
2 - CALIFORNIA CROWN: Has made a strong return in 2025, securing two consecutive victories to qualify for the Open Allowance grade. Known for his speed, California Crown will keep the competition on their toes as he faces more formidable opponents. This is a learning experience for California Crown.
3 - BARNABY: Showed a disappointing performance in the December 7, 2024, Mouttet Mile, finishing seventh and six lengths behind the victor. After returning on January 1, he was narrowly beaten by Run Julie Run at seven furlongs. For Barnaby to be competitive here, he needs to close in on what is expected to be a fast pace and make his move in the final two furlongs.
4 - ATOMICA: Has struggled in her last two outings, finishing 10th in the Mouttet Mile and third, six and a half lengths behind Pack Plays in the other. The 7 ½ furlong distance is more favourable for Atomica compared to her previous race against Pack Plays, but she typically excels when leading. To contend for victory, she needs to demonstrate her best from the outset.
5 - PACK PLAYS: Recently dominated the 6 ½ furlong Eileen Cliggott Trophy, winning while carrying 115 lbs. In this race, he’s carrying an additional 9 lbs after defeating Atomica by three lengths. The key concern for Pack Plays is the increased distance; it's uncertain if his speed will sustain over 7 ½ furlongs. His chances are bolstered by the experienced jockey Shane Ellis aboard.
6 - MAMMA MIA: Achieved a notable victory on February 8 in an Overnight Allowance race. Stepping up against tougher competition, Mamma Mia has demonstrated her ability to succeed and is known for running on the lead. However, maintaining this style against superior rivals presents a significant challenge.
