Richie Shakes became the first apprentice from his new group to achieve three race victories. This accomplishment came to fruition when Shakes guided Benson to a triumphant finish in the six-furlong George HoSang Trophy on Saturday, January 18, 2025.

Under the guidance of seasoned trainer Fitznahum Williams, Shakes wasted no time in asserting his strategy as soon as the starting barriers opened. With a commendable burst of speed, he propelled Benson into the lead right from the outset. Shakes displayed a keen sense of race dynamics as he paced Benson throughout the race, ensuring that the horse had enough energy in reserve to fend off any rivals challenging in the final stretch.

Ultimately, the partnership crossed the finish line 1 ½ lengths ahead of the competition, clocking in an impressive time of 1:14.3. Following Shakes and Benson were Mudshaft, ridden by Trevor Simpson, who secured second place, and Thalita, with Robert Halledeen aboard, taking third.

Following the race, in a post-race interview, Shakes reflected on the pivotal role that following his trainer's advice played in securing this victory. He reiterated how essential it is for a jockey to adhere to the specific strategies laid out by their trainers, which proved crucial in this particular race. Shakes shared how he and Benson previously attained victory on December 28, 2024, marking his initial win as a licensed apprentice.

“The trainer’s instructions were very clear. Benson is a speedster, so I had to get him to the lead from the number two draw, then rate him properly as rivals would be coming in the final furlong,” Shakes explained.

“Thankfully, I was able to do as the trainer required, and got the job done, for my third overall win since I started to ride,” he added.

When discussing the significance of achieving his third overall victory, Shakes expressed a mix of joy and determination. “This is just the beginning. It is good to ride three winners, yet my main objective is to grow and develop, so that more winners will become available,” he stated.
