Jockey Kosuke Matsumoto died after a training accident at Japan's Sonoda racetrack on Monday. He was 43.
Matsumoto was working a horse at the Amagasaki City track when another horse bolted on his way back to the stables, Racing Post reported, citing the Hyogo Prefectural Horse Racing Association. That horse crashed into Matsumoto's mount and another horse, causing three riders to hit the ground. Matsumoto was unconscious and was rushed to a nearby hospital, according to the report, and later was pronounced dead.
Amagasaki police said Matsumoto was in cardiopulmonary arrest and did not regain consciousness, according to the report. The other two riders had minor injuries.
Matsumoto rode 261 winners on the second-level National Association of Racing circuit, according to the report.
