KINGSTON, Jamaica - As the 2025 trainers' championship kicks off, racing enthusiasts are anticipating a riveting contest, particularly involving the powerhouse trio of trainers: Jason DaCosta, Anthony Nunes, and Gary Subratie. These three have consistently showcased their prowess, and with the early statistics of the season unfolding, it is clear that we might be in for a closer contest.

In 2024, DaCosta emerged as the dominant force, leading the charge with an impressive performance that left little doubt about his championship calibre. The seasoned trainer has established himself as a formidable competitor, and with two race days completed in 2025, the early indicators suggest that DaCosta is not going to back down easily.

After a rigorous start on January 1, Nunes has surged ahead, showcasing his competitive spirit that includes three winners and three second-place finishes. His strong start has propelled him to an early lead in the championship standings, placing approximately $600,000 ahead of DaCosta. This early momentum may prove pivotal as the championship progresses.

DaCosta quickly responded to Nunes’s January 1 triple with two impressive wins of his own on January 4. In addition to his victories, DaCosta's solid performances include a second-place finish and a third. This competitive fire places him securely in second place within the championship rankings and underscores that the battle for the title is far from settled.

Gary Subratie — a perennial threat in the racing scene—has claimed one victory so far in 2025. While he trails behind, Subratie's experience and aptitude for training may well position him for a resurgence as the season progresses.

Reflecting on 2024, Nunes faced challenges that impeded his quest for the championship, particularly within the higher classes. His three-year-olds—especially Derby winner Crown Chaser, along with Captain Sparrow and Supremasi—delivered consistent performances, essential in elevating the status of his stable.

However, the introduction of foreign contenders like Tiz Tok and Barnaby has strengthened his roster significantly. Among Nunes's promising prospects, Supremasi stands out; having navigated his conditions to reach the Overnight Allowance category, he is poised to effortlessly transition to Open Allowance, where expectations of further success are high. For Nunes to mount a genuine challenge for the title, his current trio of three-year-olds and the newly acquired foreign horses must perform at their peak.

DaCosta, on the other hand, boasts a robust line-up in the Overnight and higher classes. His stable includes proven performers like Mouttet Mile winner Funcaandun, who, now a four-year-old, adds a wealth of experience and ability to his roster. Other notable contenders, including Is That A Fact, Intrestntimesahead, Mamna Mia, Thalita, and Banadura, are expected to contribute significantly throughout the season.

Yet, a vital element in DaCosta’s quest for another title will be the performance of his three-year-olds, especially considering that his two-year-olds from 2024 have not showcased the calibre expected to make an impact in key races this year. It's possible that DaCosta's most talented three-year-olds are yet to debut in 2025, leaving room for optimism in his camp.

Subratie's operation may not yet be fully realized, but he possesses promising incumbents like Desert of Malibu and Atomica in Grade One, indicating that he has the breeding ground for competition. Given that he did not field many two-year-olds in 2024, anticipation builds as racing fans wait for fresh talent from Subratie’s barn to make their mark among the established stars.

The early signs in the championship are certainly encouraging, and the forecast suggests a competitive landscape ripe with potential for twists and turns throughout the season.

The expectations are high, and as the stakes are raised, it becomes clear that every race will be a crucial stepping stone toward claiming the prestigious trainers' championship in 2025. All eyes will be on these trainers as they strive for excellence, navigate their strategies, and challenge each other on the racetrack, making for an unforgettable season for fans and participants alike.
