KINGSTON, Jamaica - The 2023 Mouttet Mile showcased fierce competition, and while the dust has settled, here's an update on the runners from that memorable race.
FIRST: ROUGH ENTRY
This foreign contender emerged victorious at the Mouttet Mile, with Julien Leparoux in the saddle for trainer Rohan Crichton. Rough Entry's tactical prowess shone through as he expertly manoeuvered from an outside draw, tracking the leaders before making his decisive move around three furlongs out. Unfortunately, his form has not persisted; Rough Entry has since retired from competitive racing.
SECOND: ABILITY
The then reigning Horse of the Year, Ability, defied expectations by finishing second and taking the title as the top local-bred horse to finish in the race. Making his move in the final furlong and a half, this performance might well be his finest despite being a Derby winner. However, Ability's progression has been hampered by health issues, but he remains active, now training from a new barn.
THIRD: MAMMA MIA
The three-year-old filly delivered a stellar performance, leading the pack early and maintaining her gallop until the furlong marker. Mamma Mia’s fight for a substantial share of the Mouttet Mile purse was commendable, but she has struggled with injuries since the race. Currently, she is competing mainly in the Overnight Allowance category.
FOURTH: IS THAT A FACT
Consistent since his fourth-place finish, Is That A Fact has proven to be a top performer in 2024, amassing an impressive $6.2 million in earnings. With a solid run of form, he is poised to compete again in the upcoming 2024 Mouttet Mile.
FIFTH: PERFECT BREW
After an extended hiatus from racing in 2024 to recuperate, Perfect Brew has returned but has yet to recapture his former form. Now perceived as a run-on sprinter, his efforts in recent races have not dazzled.
SIXTH: MAHOGANY
Since the Mouttet Mile, Mahogany has struggled to maintain his form, primarily due to a history of injuries that have hindered his performance. As he ages, he races infrequently, making his future uncertain.
SEVENTH: MONEY MISER
Finishing seventh, Money Miser has established himself as a reliable competitor in the Open and Overnight Allowance classes, showcasing tenacity and skill.
EIGHTH: SHE’S MY DESTINY
The remarkable filly, She’s My Destiny, enjoyed an exceptional year in 2023 and has since transitioned to the breeding shed, where hopefully she will contribute to the next generation of champions.
NINTH: I AM FRED
Once a standout competitor, I Am Fred's career has been plagued by injuries, leading to sporadic appearances on the track.
TENTH: AMERICAN TAP
Starting strong in local competitions, American Tap's trajectory hasn’t met expectations. She has now found a new home on a breeding farm.
ELEVENTH: DUKE
A stalwart of the racing scene, Duke's most notable achievement was an unexpected second place in the 2022 Mouttet Mile. Duke has moved on to greener pastures.
TWELFTH: MOJITO
After failing to meet the lofty expectations set for him, Mojito embarked on a long recovery but made a comeback a month ago with a victory. Nevertheless, his time away may leave him an outsider to compete in the 2024 Mouttet Mile.
THIRTEEN: RUNAWAY ALGO
With a promising start to his career, injuries have significantly limited Runaway Algo’s appearances, resulting in a scarcity of race days.
FOURTEEN: EASY AS A.B.C
An inconsistent competitor, Easy As A.B.C has passed.
Note: Dane Dawkins that the jockey on Atomica fell during the race, while Blue Vinyl was a late non-starter.
