KINGSTON, Jamaica – Apprentice Samantha Fletcher was at her dogged and determined best on Eye Candy as the pair combined to win the fourth of 10 races just moments ago on the Saturday card currently taking place at Caymanas Park.
Fletcher watched in fourth place as speedster Sir Kel (Jerome Innis – 16-1) set a blistering pace with Western Wheels (Chris Mamdeen – 1-1) and Twilight Dreams (Raddesh Roman – 5-1) following in that order.
At one stage Sir Kel was four lengths in front in the 5 ½ furlong contest which was an Optional Claiming event ($750,000 - $700,000) for maiden four-year-olds and upwards, but Fletcher remained calm on the Dennis Lee trained chestnut filly.
Turning for home all horses went wide to avoid a large puddle on the inside rails following a downpour of rain. When they settled in the straight, Western Wheels and Mamdeen made their move and took over but Fletcher on the wide outside pushed Eye Candy to the inside rails and after a stirring battle with Mamdeen got Eye Candy across the line by a neck amidst cheers from those at the track.
Western Wheels was second with Uncle Freddie third.
