KINGSTON, Jamaica - The ninth race on Sunday, July 7, 2024, is dedicated to Clovis Metcalfe, the chairman of the Jamaica Racing Commission.
The Clovis Metcalfe is an Open Allowance event for three-year-olds and older horses, covering a distance of 7 ½ furlongs.
Below is The Quick Galloper’s analysis, listed in draw order:
1 - FUNCAANDUN
After a four-race winning streak, Funcaandun was bested by Rhythm Buzz on June 15 at nine furlongs and 25 yards. This was his first race of the season, during which he faced some gear issues on the backstretch. With this run now behind him and the distance more favourable, Funcaandun is poised for a strong performance. He has been training well, though the competition is fierce.
2 - TAURUS BOY
Not expected to make a significant impact in this race.
3 - INSPIRE FORCE
Entered Open Allowance after two consecutive wins over 5 ½ furlongs. Known for his come-from-behind victories, Inspire Force faces his toughest opponents yet in this 7 ½ furlong race and may need to wait for another opportunity.
4 - ABILITY
Seeking a second win in Open Allowance after finishing second to Rhythm Buzz and Funcaandun on June 15 over nine furlongs and 25 yards. With the distance now in his favour and in peak form, Ability has a prime chance to advance to Grade One.
5 - MAMMA MIA
Consistently sets the pace in Open Allowance races. Mamma Mia is expected to do the same but will likely be overtaken in the final stretch.
6 - EASY AS A.B.C
Overcame health issues to win at non-four and in Overnight. Now entering Open Allowance, Easy As A.B.C is expected to be competitive with this recent win under his belt.
7 - SONNY T AND CHIPPY
Not expected to handle the competition in this race.
8 - MAHOGANY
Has yet to win in three starts this season and had a poor performance on May 23 when defeated by I Am Fred over 5 ½ furlongs. Despite this, Mahogany is the class horse in this event and with Shane Ellis riding, he is the one to beat. Note that Mahogany will race with blinkers on.
9 - GET A PEPSI
Comes into the race after two consecutive wins. While winning in Open Allowance is approaching, it not going to be today.
