KINGSTON, Jamaica - The first reaction from The Quick Galloper when the entries for the 2024 - 2000 Guineas were made public was: Where Is Captain Sparrow?

Trainer of Captain Sparrow, who is considered by many to be one of the top contenders for possible honours in the 2000 Guineas, Anthony Nunes provided details to The Quick Galloper.

THE QUICK GALLOPER (TQG)

TQG: Why is Captain Sparrow not in the 2024 - 2000 Guineas field?

AN: Captain Sparrow was progressing well in his preparations to race in the 2000 Guineas. Then about six or seven days ago, we noticed that he was not eating as usual. Now, Captain Sparrow is a voracious eater, he eats a ton and with much gusto. Suddenly things changed.

TQG: What was your first response?

AN: The vet was quickly called in and we found out that he had a problem with one of his teeth. The problematic tooth was then removed, and Captain Sparrow was given the requisite time to recover. Still, he was barely eating, but throughout, he never had a temperature.

TQG: Did you order any blood tests?

AN: A blood test was immediately done, with the results showing that he had some issues but nothing major. Again, he was not eating as usual. I then took him off the track for the last two or three days, to ensure his health and safety. Captain Sparrow’s coat is fine, and he looks good but the decision was taken to not nominate him for the 2000 Guineas out of an abundance of caution by myself in consultation with the owner.

TQG: That must have been a painful decision.

AN: Oh gosh…. yes! Captain Sparrow was moving so well in the mornings, he went through all of his work with aplomb and was so close to being ready for his Classic run. This is racing and for sure, the keep and care of the animals are of primary importance.

TGQ: What is next for Captain Sparrow?

AN: Well, now it is a waiting game. We have to give him time to get back to his true self, which hopefully is soon, and then we will steer him towards the 10-furlong Jamaica St Leger in July.

TQG: All the best with Captain Sparrow, trainer.

AN: Thanks much.
