KINGSTON, Jamaica - “My instruction to jockey Omar Walker (rider of Atomica) was short and simple…ride her faster every furlong of the eight…and then come what may.”

Those instructions by trainer Gary Subratie were meticulously delivered in quite invigourating fashion by Walker and Atomica as they sped to victory in the 2024 edition of the The Viceroy Trophy on Easter Monday, April 1.

Racing against three rivals, Atomica clocked 23.2 seconds for the first two furlongs, then 45.2 seconds for the half-mile, a fast acceleration of 22 seconds for two furlongs.

Atomica finished the one-mile trip in a sobering 1:39.2 seconds, 15 15 ½ lengths ahead of second-placed Is That A Fact, with Green Gold Rush third and Rough Entry occupying the final fourth position.

“Right now, she still has her niggling issues, but what I can say is that she has never been better, and for sure, I am always keeping my fingers crossed.

“My task and those at the stables, is to ensure she is always ok, that she is happy and healthy.

“Omar (Walker) is a well-established rider with six championships to his credit, plus he has ridden Atomica before, and he did an accomplished job. I am pleased with his performance in the saddle,” Subratie told Quickgallopja.com.

As to when Atomica will race again?

“I will be going through the races available in the condition book, and in consultation with the owner make a decision. Let us wait and see,” the trainer said in closing.

Atomica’s career racing record now stands at 21 starts, with 15 wins, two second place finishes and no third third place. Her career earning is now close to $25 million.

  1. atomica is as good as they come,if it wasn't for her quirky behavior sometimes in races where she is hemmed in,her record would be about 18 victories, she's now ICONIC in the annals of local racing.
