KINGSTON, Jamaica - On Saturday, March 23, 2024, the three-year-old bay colt Chocomo, bred in the USA, secured a victory in his first race on local ground.
In a six-furlong maiden condition race for three-year-olds and older, both native-bred and imported, Chocomo finished 2 ¼ lengths ahead of his competition.
Despite recording a time of 1:15.4 (23.1 x 47.1) which didn't stand out, Chocomo's performance suggests he's a contender to keep an eye on.
“He [Chocomo] is a fantastic horse. I brought him down here; my trainer thinks well of him, and let’s see where we can go from here. I think we have a good horse in the making,” said Milad Azan owner of the importee.
“First run, first win, easy win, and so there’s nothing to complain about. He was easy but time will tell. He is young and so let’s see how he progresses,” he continued.
With jockey Robert Halledeen, Chocomo quickly took the lead from the starting gate. However, this lead was brief as Cleopatra Queen (Oneil Mullings) took over heading into the half-mile.
As the race neared its end, Chocomo regained the lead and maintained a strong pace to finish ahead of Cleopatra Queen and Riches to Rags (Tevin Foster).
