KINGSTON, Jamaica - Prior to its local racetrack debut, American Tap gained attention with impressive morning exercise sessions. However, as we all know, competitive races take place in the afternoons, not mornings.
As anticipation for American Tap's debut reached a fever pitch, punters eagerly awaited the six-year-old American-bred's performance on Saturday, October 21, 2023, in the Nigel B Nunes Memorial Cup at five furlongs straight.
When the race began, it quickly became evident that the well-established Overnight Allowance field was up against a formidable competitor.
Once the dust settled, American Tap — owned by Willie's Racing Stables, trained by Howard Jaghai, and ridden by Tevin Foster — lived up to expectations based on its exercise times. American Tap secured an easy victory by 4¾ lengths in a final time of 58.2 seconds with splits of 23.1 x 46.0.
"American Tap is very special to us. She is undoubtedly the best horse I've ever trained. She possesses a unique blend of speed and stamina and should be able to compete at a mile. She emerged from this race in great condition and is content, which is all that matters moving forward," stated trainer Jaghai.
With the prestigious Mouttet Mile being the primary goal for American Tap's connections, Jaghai told this website that no decision has been made as to whether his charge will race before December 2 — the scheduled date of the Mouttet Mile.
"I can't provide a clear answer at this time regarding whether or not American Tap will race before the Mouttet Mile. The owners and I will sit down and discuss this matter," said Jaghai.
