KINGSTON, Jamaica – “I was completely surprised when I was officially informed that the Gold Cup would now bear my name. I am appreciative of this honour,” was the response from many times champion trainer Philip Feanny when the announcement was made at a press conference.
This press conference was held earlier today (Thursday, October 5, 2023) at Caymanas Park.
“For me the Gold Cup has always been a special race. When proper handicapping is applied, the distance of the Gold Cup of seven furlongs gives the sprinters a chance and it also gives the stayers a chance.
“One can never forget in the 1970s when Monte’s Stitch won the Gold Cup with 140 lb in his back. That surely was and still is a moment to cherish in the history of local racing at Caymanas Park,” Feanny shared with Quickgallop.com.
