KINGSTON, Jamaica – Captain Calico, a chestnut colt by Soul Warrior out of Rackam's Mistress, easily outpaced rivals at Caymanas, Saturday, September 2, 2023, fifth.

The fifth event featured three-year-old non-winners of two for locally bred horses, as well as being a maiden for three-year-old foreign horses over a distance of five furlongs straight.

Captain Calico notched his second win in as many career starts, both over the five-furlong straight course. In Saturday's race, jockey Tevin Foster guided the colt wearing a tongue tie to victory for trainer Anthony Nunes. This marked Captain Calico's first appearance in 103 days since winning his debut race on May 22.

Addressing the long hiatus between starts, trainer Nunes explained: "After his first race, Captain Calico developed sore shins and had to be pin-fired. We had to wait for him to recover from that injury."

Nunes then commented on Captain Calico's progress: "He has real talent. Standing over 16 hands tall, we have initially raced him on the straight course to protect him. Now that he's gained more race day experience, it's time for Captain Calico to test his skills around the bend. Overall, there's no doubt he's a promising horse; however, we must handle him cautiously and monitor him closely."
