KINGSTON, Jamaica - On Sunday, August 20, 2023, Omar Williams achieved his first career win as a certified conditioner when he saddled Rohan Kabir to victory in the ninth and final race at Caymanas Park.
Williams was among the 39 who graduated from the 2023 Jamaica Racing Commission’s Trainer’s Training programme on May 12.
Rohan Kabir’s victory came in a three-year-old and upwards Optional Claiming call with a spread of $550,000-$450,000, that also included five-year-olds and upwards (non-winners of four) over 7 furlongs.
The seven-year-old chestnut gelding Rohan Kabir, with Raddesh Roman in the saddle, won the event by a whopping 11 ½ lengths in a time of 1:29.0.
“I am feeling really great about this win. It is my first career win, and I am happy about it. I dreamed about this day 12 years ago,” Williams said after the win.
“I was brought into the game by trainer Everal Francis. I was coming to the track from when I was four years old, and at first I thought about becoming a jockey, but my uncle didn’t want me to ride. I stayed out of the game for a while, came back, and got my assistant licence. I have worked with Everal Francis and Ryan Darby,” Williams revealed.
Rohan Kabir got a good break at the start, settling into third position down the backstretch behind Hecandance (Omar Walker) and Big Argument (Richard Henry). Rohan Kabir bided his time well until approaching the distance; he hit the front and pulled away for an easy win ahead of Fault Line (Phillip Parchment ) and Prosecco (Matthew Bennett).
“I was telling them from day one that Rohan Kabir was going to be my first winner. I about five horses now and so I hope to win more races,” Williams ended.
