KINGSTON, Jamaica - The seventh race on Jamaica Derby Day (Monday, August 7, 2023) features the annual renewal of the nine furlongs and 25 yards, Legal Light Trophy.
This prestigious event is an Open Allowance competition for three-year-olds and up, with six entrants vying for victory.
The Quick Galloper provides an assessment of each horse in post-position order below.
1 - MINIATURE MAN has demonstrated impressive consistency in his Overnight and Open Allowance races, contending with top handicappers. His best hope is a second-place finish.
2 - REGAL AND ROYAL has performed admirably to reach this level of competition but may find it challenging to keep pace with the current field.
3 - ATOMICA overcame a rocky start to her four-year-old campaign and has since scored back-to-back wins. She is the heavy favorite in this trophy event. Punters should look for the horse finishing second to complete an exacta bet.
4 - D HEAD CORNERSTONE has only recently entered this grade and may need more racing experience.
5 - SIR JOHN, despite wearing a tongue tie and cheekpieces, lacks a realistic chance of winning.
6 - MONEY MONSTER has been competing at the Open Allowance level for some time now and is the logical choice for a second-place finish behind Atomica.
