Hall of Fame jockey Calvin Borel, a three-time Kentucky Derby winner who continues to ply his craft at age 52, was arrested Sunday for driving under the influence, reports WDRB, Louisville's FOX affiliate.
Borel was pulled over near Corydon, Ind., at 6:30 p.m. and, per the Harrison County Sheriff's Department report "had slurred speed, poor balance and staggered from his vehicle." The jockey faces two charges of operating a vehicle while intoxicated after his breath measured over the legal limit.
Borel rode in three races Sunday at Ellis Park in Henderson, Ky., before the arrest, finishing in the money on each horse. His agent, Steve Krajcir, told Horse Racing Nation that Borel -- "not the strongest when it comes to driving" -- stopped in southern Indiana on his way back to Louisville for the evening.
"He went to go get back on the interstate, I guess, and he went down the wrong turn, and they pulled him over," Krajcir said.
The agent said he has spoken with an Indiana racing steward about Borel's mounts at Indiana Grand on Tuesday and Wednesday. Borel will be allowed to ride.
"He'll have to go to school and all that," Krajcir said, alluding to the type of sanctions that will keep Borel in good standing at the racetrack.
For the year, Borel has won on 23 of 212 mounts. And throughout his career, the 2013 Hall of Fame inductee has tallied 5,244 victories, among them the Derby in 2007 (Street Sense), 2009 (Mine That Bird) and 2010 (Super Saver). The Louisiana native also rode super filly Rachel Alexandra, the Kentucky Oaks winner who also took the 2009 Preakness Stakes.
Borel has been in and out of retirement in recent years, most recently returning in 2016. He was also arrested in August of 2011 for driving under the influence in Evansville, Ind., which neighbours Ellis Park.
