KINGSTON, Jamaica – It will be a Saturday to remember for champion trainer Jason DaCosta and champion owner Carlton Watson as the pair combined to finish first and second - Mamma Mia (Phillip Parchment) and Thalita (Dane Dawkins) respectively - in the one mile three year-old fillies only Classic -the Jamaica 1000 Guineas.
Mamma Mia as expected was on the front end from the start, quickly asserting herself until tackled by shedrow companion Thalita. The latter took over entering the straight but Parchment was having none of it, as he dug deep into his reserves to rally Mamma Mia for the win.
For Parchment it was his third Classic race victory having previously won the Derby on King Arthur, and the Jamaica Oaks on Princess Anne. Interesting, King Arthur and Princess Anne were both owned by Watson, and trained by Jason’s father, Wayne.
For Jason DaCosta, it was his second Classic race victory.
