KINGSTON, Jamaica – The 1000 Guineas, 2023, is scheduled for next Saturday, June 3, 2023, at Caymanas Park.
The Quick Galloper takes a look at the result of the 2022 version of this one-mile event for three-year-old fillies at a mile, to see the progress or lack of progress of the eight participants.
FIRST: ATOMICA – victory in the 1000 Guineas Classic by this filly led to a second place in the 10-furlong St Leger, and then the crowning glory of winning the 12-furlong Jamaica Derby. If that was not enough for her connections, Atomica raced against older horses, smashing them in the high-profile Jamaica Cup. She was then voted as the 2022 Horse of the Year. Atomica began her four-year-old career looking completely out of sorts, finishing last of 13 starts in the Open Allowance grade. In her second start as a four-year-old in Overnight Allowance, Atomica found herself with another of her trademark performances, while clocking a fast 1:24.4 for seven furlongs.
SECOND: OUR ANGEL – left the 1000 Guineas with her stock in place. Moved on to take the Classic Jamaica Oaks (10 furlongs), but since then in August (2022), Our Angel has not pressed on sufficiently and is still trying to fulfill her conditions.
THIRD: SILENT MISSION – unfortunately this filly passed on.
FOURTH: SUNSET SILHOUTTE – has never lived up to early expectations, still pinging around trying to go through her conditions.
FIFTH: FLY MESSENGER FLY – has raced so many times since her fifth-placed finish in the 1000 Guineas, it cannot even be counted. Fly Messenger Fly despite her rather innocuous career continues to earn for her connections.
SIXTH: GOLDEN WATTLE – entered the 1000 Guineas as the champion two-year-old of 2021. Golden Wattle had several health issues to deal which derailed her performance at three, leading to her retirement to stud.
SEVENTH: PELICULA – has failed to enhance her reputation after the Guineas.
EIGHTH: NEFERTARI – still hanging around with nothing much to show for her efforts.
