KINGSTON, Jamaica - The victory by Mahogany in the 48th running of the prestigious $2.25-million Gold Cup at Caymanas Park on Saturday, October 22, 2022, has left a lasting impression on part-owner Henry Pratt.
Trained by Ian Parsard, the well-decorated Mahogany, who is currently the top-rated horse in the country, produced another brilliant effort to beat rivals by three lengths to win the three-year-old and upwards Open Allowance/Graded Stakes contest going 7 furlongs (1,400m).
“I won the Jamaica 1000 Guineas and Oaks Classic races last year in terms of prestige, but certainly in terms of satisfaction, this was certainly one of the best ones. He was handicapped, in my opinion, out of the race and to see the performance he put down here today (Saturday, October 22), I am lost for words,” Pratt said.
“Excellent job all around, and Reyan [Lewis] did a marvellous job in the saddle. The trainer, the groom, everybody did what they were supposed to do, and the horse just produced the goods today. He has performed above and beyond what I had expected.
“I knew that he would run a good race, but to put them away like this, I mean, I am so pleased. This one is sweet. This is certainly the most pleasing win. This is such a fulfilling victory,” Pratt added.
Ridden by Reyan Lewis, Mahogany was held off the early fractions as he raced in fourth place down the backstretch behind stablemate She’s A Wonder (Jerome Innis), She’s My Destiny (Jordan Barrett) and the Atomica (Dane Dawkins). Mahogany slipped down into third place going into the half-mile (800m) turn before taking over approaching the distance.
The long-striding Mahogany picked up the pace in the stretch and won ahead of Runaway Algo (Chris Mamdeen) and I Am Fred (Anthony Thomas) in a time of 1:25.3 with splits of 23.2 x 46.4 x 1:11.0.
