KINGSTON, Jamaica - On September 28, 2020, apprentice rider Anthony Allen felt the wrath of the regulatory agency for horse racing, the Jamaica Racing Commission (JRC).
The young rider, who was at the start of what he wanted to be a successful and prolific career in horse racing, was slapped with a two-year suspension from all riding duties and was also fined $250,000.
The suspension and the fine were necessitated after Allen was found with an electrical device or ‘battery’ as it is commonly called in Jamaica, just before entering the starting gate to participate in a race at Caymanas Park.
Allen has now paid the requisite fine and served his period of suspension, thereby paving the way for a return to his stated profession. That happened on Saturday of last week, October 15, 2022.
“Mr Allen has served his suspension, and he has paid his fine and is once again allowed to officially ride,” a JRC steward confirmed to this publication.
Allen says that the suspension affected not only his ability to earn but also the way he thinks, and how he will move forward as a reinsman.
“Sir! Life is full of mindless acts of misdeeds. One of which, I was found guilty of as charged. I am now back at the Park trying to resume my riding career and complete my jockey apprenticeship status that was put on hold about two years ago when the incident occurred. For me, Anthony Allen, that is now in the past. It is over and done with.
“I made a mistake, it was difficult for me and those around me, but I have put myself on a different path at this time,” the reinsman said.
The young man in his career thus far has ticked off 15 wins for 191 rides. He is now committed to improving himself in the saddle by dint of hard work and with focussed concentration on the right way to go about things.
“I am not seeking any forgiveness after serving my sentence for the racing violation.
“I have returned to the races to ride and I got an early opportunity to re-acclimatise to the feel of professional race riding. My mount over last weekend provided me with the feel of the reins in my hands on a race day, which is different from working out horses in the mornings at exercise.
“I am continuing my fitness programme, as you all know that one of the keys to getting good rides is to maintain your weight, and that is what I am trying to do,” Allen said.
Speaking more about the difficulties during his suspension Allen added. “It was difficult, and really hard during the two years, and I would like to encourage all those who believe that going against the law or the rules in my case is not the right move. Stay straight and concentrate on personal development and that will take you forward in life. I have paid the price and now I have a second chance which I am going to make full use of. Thanks much for the interview, and hopefully, I will see you in the winners’ enclosure shortly. I give thanks to all, my family members and others who have supported me during this rough period. Thanks all!”
