KINGSTON, Jamaica - The 48th running of the Gold Cup, the top handicap event on the local horse racing calendar, unfolds at Caymanas Park tomorrow, Saturday, October 22, 2022.
The three-year-old and upwards Open Allowance/Graded Stakes call at seven furlongs (1,400m) has attracted eight runners, among them the top-rated horses in the land to include the Ian Parsard pair of Jordon Reign’s and Mahogany and Gary Subratie’s talented Derby-winning filly Atomica.
Below is the analysis of each runner and their chances of winning the coveted trophy and the $2.25-million purse on offer.
-
JORDON REIGN’S (USA): (4 b g by Mosler – Dearie Be Good) – The most-improved horse in training at present. Jordon Reign’s completed four-consecutive wins coming into this race; his last over one mile (1,600m) in the She’s A Maneater Trophy (August 27). Then Jordon Reign’s won by two lengths in a time of 1:39.1. Jordon Reign’s should be more effective over this distance, and given his running style of being able to sit close to pacesetters and then striking, he has every chance of winning, especially with many proven speedsters in the line-up.
-
ATOMICA: (3 ch f by Nuclear Wayne – Honkeytonkville) – Talented filly who has won seven races from eight starts, including victories in this year’s Jamaica 1000 Guineas and Derby Classic races. Stepping out of her age group for the first to tackle Open Allowance horses for the I’msatisfied Trophy, just 21 days ago, Atomica made one move to win the six-furlong event by 7 ½ lengths in a blistering 1:10.4, showing vast improvement. Atomica faces her toughest task to date, but this filly is so gifted and will not go down without a fight. Atomica has speed, but on this occasion, it might be prudent for his jockey Dane Dawkins to hold her a bit in the early stages before making a bid.
-
SHE’S MY DESTINY: (4 ch f by Bern Identity – Woman Is Boss) – This filly is coming to grips with life at this level. She’s My Destiny is an out-and-out sprinter, who will be outdone come tomorrow.
-
RUNAWAY ALGO (USA): (3 ch h by Algorithms – Misunify) – Ran very well on last when going down to Calculus by three lengths in the Mark My Word Trophy over nine furlongs and 25 yards (1,820m) on October 8. Runaway Algo is going to appreciate this reduction in the journey, but he does so against the best racing has to offer. Runaway Algo faces no easy task but is in with a shout.
-
I AM FRED (USA): (4 b g by Golden Lad – Happy Hailey) – Finished a length and three- quarters second to top stayer Calculus in the recent 10-furlong (2000m) run Menudo Trophy. I Am Fred should go well at this distance. He has the ability to keep up with the early pace, which is plentiful in this one, before making a thrust for victory. Seven furlongs is about right for I’m Fred.
-
MAHOGANY: (5 ch g by Sensational Slam – Mete-Orite) – The top-rated horse at present in the country. Mahogany got his three-race win streak halted by I Am Fred in the six-furlong None Such Sprint Trophy on September 10. Mahogany did run a fast 1:30.2 over 7 ½ furlongs (1,500m) on July 2, suggesting that seven furlongs of the Gold Cup is the ideal trip for him. He has been moving sweetly at exercise and despite giving weight all round, Mahogany could use his class to show rivals the way home.
-
RACE CAR (USA): (5 gr/rn h by Race Day – Mcduffie) – Is going to be left behind in this one.
-
SHE’S A WONDER: (4 b f by Bern Identity – Jamaican Dream) – Classy filly who has no chance of winning this trophy race, especially against these runners.
