KINGSTON, Jamaica - The well-decorated riding career of the great Winston “Fanna” Griffiths might be over but for the many-times champion jockey, another door has opened for a new chapter in his racing career to begin.
Griffiths, the man who holds the record of riding the most winners at Caymanas Park at 1,664, is listed among 41 individuals to undergo training as conditioners of thoroughbred racehorses. This new endeavour by Griffiths started on Thursday, May 19.
The 2022 Trainers’ Training Programme, which is under the supervision of the regulatory body of horse racing, the Jamaica Racing Commission (JRC), was launched on Tuesday of this week.
Griffiths, who retired from his saddle duties approximately seven years ago and was recently honoured for his contribution to the sport with a trophy race named after him, said that he could not live his life without racehorses.
“First of all, horses are really in my blood and after retiring from riding, I think it is time for me to really get around the horses a little bit more,” the man of few words said.
Griffiths continued: “My plan is really to be around the horses and to really get ‘babies’ [young horses] and try to work along with them.”
While his riding career was a huge success, Griffiths said that he is looking forward to this new phase in his racing life and life in general.
“Well, my riding career came to an end and then I had to give myself a little break. It was very good and I am hoping that the training will work out the same way,” Griffiths said.
