KINGSTON, Jamaica - THE QUICK GALLOPER analyses the last five races on the card of Saturday, May 14, 2022.
RACE SEVEN – This was Division One of a maiden condition call for three-year-olds with 11 starters, of which six were first-time starters. One of those newcomers Flight Time with Andre Martin aboard for veteran conditioner Wilfred Chin sat off the pace from the start and then went by the leaders with aplomb in the straight getting by the winning post in front by 3 ½ lengths. Then the stewards’ inquiry sign went up followed by a jockey’s objection lodged by Andre Powell, who rode third-place finisher and another first-timer D Head Cornerstone. After the dust settled, the stewards took down the colours of Flight Time, and the race was awarded to 9-1 chance Sir Tajay, with D Head Cornerstone second and Salud third.
RACE EIGHT – Stretched out for the first time this season, Billy Whizz got back in his normal groove with a rousing victory at nine furlongs in an Overnight Allowance call. Billy Whizz guided by Anthony Thomas for trainer Jason DaCosta went to the front, was challenged by Supreme Soul for about four furlongs, and then it was a one-horse race.
RACE NINE – This was Division Two of the maiden condition event for three-year-olds and again there were eleven starters with six first-timers. Josh trained by Richard Azan was the prohibitive 1-2 favourite but although he had the benefit of experience had to play second fiddle to the impressive Unruly Dude (Bern Identity – Wonder Girl) on his first race track appearance. Jockey Robert Halledeen sent Unruly Dude trained by Dennis Pryce to the lead and was never threatened thereafter. Certainly, Unruly Dude is one to watch as the Pryce, Busy Racing Stable alliance continues to produce the winners.
RACE TEN – Showing his diversity and a welcome return to form, King Arthur, spanked his five rivals to list the Lady Geeta Trophy to his many accomplishments. Sitting in the saddle for this trophy event at six furlongs was Omar Walker, who has once again found himself working with another DaCosta, this time trainer Jason. The return to form of King Arthur augurs well for the top class with the likes of Further and Beyond, Runaway Algo, Excessive Force, I’m Fred, I’ve Got Magic, Mahogany, Billy Whizz, Duke, and others lurking.
RACE ELEVEN – A seemingly rejuvenated with equipment change and all delivered for jockey Javaniel Patterson and trainer Gary Subratie. Patterson thus became the second rider on the day to benefit from the absence of Dane Dawkins.
