KINGSTON, Jamaica – Following a relatively calm day, when the highest odds winner was Victoria’s Medallion at 7-1 in the first, the upset finally came in the final event of eleven on the Saturday card of April 30.
The 17-1 upset was created by the Donovan Plummer trained; Nicholas Hibbert rode Denbigh Life in a three-year-old and upwards Optional Claimer ($400,000 - $300,000) going a mile.
Having raced most of his 30-race career at the shorter distances, Denbigh Life, with the visor off and the cheekpieces on, set off in front from the word go. Despite going wide when entering the straight, and drifting consistently to the outside rails, Denbigh Life plugged on gamely to thwart the effort of Prince Dominick (Omar Walker), who was glued to the inside rails.
When the winning post arrived Denbigh Life was three parts of a length in front of Prince Dominick, with Silent Cat (Tevin Foster) and Nala’s Bushman (Roger Hewitt) in a dead heat for third.
Denbigh Life rewarded her backers with a $933 win dividend.
The quietly successful Plummer was recording his seventh triumph in 2022, while for Hibbert it was his second.
