Tevin Foster is the highlight with a natural hattrick

THE JOCKEYS

The forward trajectory of a thoroughly rejuvenated jockey Tevin Foster continued without pause after riding a natural hattrick.
Foster’s winners in the eighth, ninth, and tenth races respectively were Mother Nature for trainer Gregory Forsyth, Milkman for Dennis Pryce, and Sweet N Smart for Gary Subratie.
After returning from injury in the early part of last year, which kept out the saddle for a while, Foster has been a revelation. His maturity is visible plus there is a marked improvement in his riding skills, plus his current link with the stables of champion trainer Anthony Nunes has provided a steady source of winners.
The undeniable talent of Shane Ellis was again brought to the fore by his performance atop Calculus in the Alex Hamilton Memorial Trophy run over a mile.
It was a spell-binding performance by the “Canter Man”, causing an undue amount of confusion to Robert Halledeen onboard Oneofakind. The quality of the ride by Ellis outwitted Halledeen by limiting the options of where to make his move, whether on the inside or the outside - all done by Ellis within the rules of racing.
THE QUICK GALLOPER hopes that the younger riders around were watching and hopefully learning.

THE HORSES

Calculus allowing weight to all on sundry proved that at the moment he is one of the leading lights currently in training, who will undoubtedly develop and grow in his four-year-old year.
During his three-year-old Classic season Calculus trained mainly by Gary Subratie, built his reputation based on the longer distances but has since displayed his diversity by winning the seven-furlong Gold Cup and now the one-mile Alex Hamilton. Racing fans will now await the day when Calculus comes up against the top-rated horse in the land and his perennial rival Further and Beyond.
Credit is enormously due to Subratie for his handling of Calculus.
The eyes of punters at this early stage in a new season are usually riveted on the development of the three-year-olds. They have already the progress made by fillies Atomica and Outbidder and now a colt is in view.
Roraima by Bern Identity out of Classic Princess trained by Anthony Nunes, a first-timer came from well off the lead to shed the maiden tag at a mile. How Roraima won must have warmed the heart of his trainer, and this winning manner is a possible indication that this colt will be quite at home going the longer distances. Roraima reminds THE QUICK GALLOPER of a past Nunes inmate Relampago.
Carefully watch the progress of Roraima.
