Jockey Dane Dawkins is the star with 4 wins

KINGSTON, Jamaica – On a day when eight of the 10 races were won by three jockeys, Dane Dawkins continued his upward surge with four winners; Atomica, Mister A, Jordon Reign’s, and Patriarch.

Robert Halledeen had two winners, in the first two races on the day, Pip and Silent Cat; while Tevin Foster was also on two winners Basilicus and a chance ride on Carol Strike.

The two jockeys who were out of place were Hakeem Pottinger on Broken Light and Javaniel Patterson on Heart of the Sea in the nightcap.

By virtue of his four wins, Dawkins has surged to the top of the jockeys’ championship with 7 wins, two more than Halledeen in second place. The third slot is occupied by Tevin Foster with three wins in his account.

The talent of Dawkins came into full view with his performance on Patriarch. He rated the speedster, who is known for shutting off after leading very well and when passed by God of Love with Halledeen in the saddle during the stretch run somehow found extra from Patriarch to win by three parts of a length.

Of note is that reigning champion Anthony Thomas from his five mounts was winless on the day.

HORSES

Atomica

The big talking point of the day was the performance of three-year-old chestnut filly Atomica (Nuclear Wayne – Honeytonkville) trained by Gary Subratie.

Racing for the second occasion, this time over six furlongs, Atomica was slowly out of her stall, but way better off than the first time she raced on December 11. In her first competitive effort, Atomica came from way behind to win by three lengths, on Saturday (Jan 15), Dawkins hustled her to lead, and once in the straight significantly increased the tempo of her gallop to beat much better company by six lengths in a time for the distance of 1:13.0.

To underscore the value of the run by Atomica, it is to be noted that her clocking of 1:13.0 was the same time done by Patriarch at the much higher Open Allowance level just 3 ½ hours later.

Atomica with this her second victory has joined colt Brinks, and another filly Golden Wattle as the only three horses in the present three-year-old cohort to win two or more races.

For sure, Atomica has laid down her Classic marker and from here will be watched closely.

Jordon Reign’s

This foreigner has raced four times and has won three times. Jordon Reign’s, who lost to Secret Identity over 5 ½ furlongs on last (December 11, 2021), returned at five furlongs straight and literally, strolled the entire distance while clocking a fast time of 58.3 seconds.

With those three wins, Jordon Reign’s trained by Ian Parsard has now reached the Overnight Allowance grade where he should have no difficulties in dealing with the opposition there before moving on to the highest level, where we wait anxiously to see how he will perform against the best horses around.
