KINGSTON, Jamaica – The first set of statistics is out for 2022. This is after one race day and 10 races.

With his three-timer, trainer Steven Todd has taken the early lead, with his Awesome Rich, Chief of State, and General Mubaraak, along with two third-place finishes earning $1,778,100. Todd, who finished seventh in 2021, will now be aiming to finish higher and this start, especially with three-year-old Awesome Rich leading the Todd three, this early lead may be a sign of things to come for this young and enterprising young conditioner.

Of the top three trainers of 2021, Anthony Nunes, Jason DaCosta, and Gary Subratie, in finishing order, only Subratie visited the winners’ enclosure on the first day of 2022. Subratie had two winners, Traditional Boy, and Awesome Treasure, to be second behind Todd in the championship. Nunes had one runner on the day, Funometer, who was unplaced, while DaCosta also had one starter Baton Rouge, who finished second behind Sweet Majesty in the tenth.

Among the leading horses by stakes earned, the leader by age is eight-year-old claimer General Mubaraak, followed by another claimer Chief of State, with Awesome Treasure, a five-year-old foreigner in the third slot. All three horses (General Mubaraak, Chief of State, and Awesome Treasure) have earned $546,000 each. This is probably the first time in the year that two claimers will head this particular championship.

In the jockeys’ championship, the rejuvenated Dane Dawkins and the improving Matthew Bennett had two winners on the day.

Of note is that champion Anthony Thomas, and Dick Cardenas are both sidelined with injury, while Dane Nelson is yet to make an appearance in 2022.
