KINGSTON, Jamaica – Champion trainer Anthony Nunes narrowed the lead in the race for the trainers’ championship following the win by Golden Wattle in the Dye Job Sprint, which was the Caymanas Saturday third. The Dye Job Sprint was for two-year-olds going six furlongs.
Nunes started the day $1,559, 895 behind leader Jason DaCosta but now with the victory by Golden Wattle, the latter’s advantage has whittled down to just over $ 1 million. DaCosta finished fifth with Fly Messenger Fly and sixth with Lion of Ekati.
Phoenix Risen (Omar Walker) and Babylike (Paul Francis) vied for the lead with Fly Messenger Fly (Anthony Thomas) and Golden Wattle (Tevin Foster) watching proceedings in third and fourth respectively.
Phoenix Risen pulled away while rounding the final part of the bend but when he entered the straight for the final two furlongs, something went awry, with Walker losing control of his mount.
Foster seized the opportunity and brought Golden Wattle with a well timed run, holding off both Power Ranking (second - Oshane Nugent) and Babylike (third) to win by a length.
Golden Wattle thus follows Brinks as the only two-year-olds thus far in 2021 to win two races.
