KINGSTON, Jamaica - A competitive field of nine runners compete for the $1.1 million Ahwhofah Sprint, a three-year-old and upwards Overnight Allowance call at Caymanas Park tomorrow (Sunday, December 12, 2021).
One Don, trained by Gary Subratie, Legality, trained by champion conditioner Anthony Nunes, and Laban, trainer by Richard Azan; are the three set to battle for top honours in this trophy race.
Laban, who takes a drop-in class from Open Allowance company, should start as favourite for the event. Laban last raced on October 30 and was beaten by Duke by a length going five and a half furlongs (1,100m).
Last Sunday, December 5, Laban was taken to task at exercise as the four-year-old bay colt strode seven furlongs (1,400m) in 1:32.0 and galloped the last five furlongs in a smooth 1:00.2. With Abigail Able in the saddle, with the possible aim of slipping weight, coming down from 57.0 kgs (126 lb) to 53.0 kgs (117 lb), Laban should prove a tough opponent.
One Don, a three-year-old American-bred chestnut colt just failed to catch God of Love at five and a half furlongs (1,100m), losing out by ½ length on November 28. One Don should relish the extra the half-furlong and from a clean break could go one better.
Legality, another American-bred runner, also ran a creditable race on December 4. Legality finished third behind I Am Fred and Excessive Force at seven and a half furlongs (1,500m). Legality is even more at home here and could fight this finish. But even with Able in the saddle, Laban has to be the choice.
The other runners in the field are Another Bullet, Deep Blue Sea, Loose Ball, Prince Charles, El Profesor, and Supreme Soul.
