KINGSTON, Jamaica – Trainer Jason DaCosta increased his lead over champion Anthony Nunes in the race for the 2021 trainer’s crown when Cartel won the Caymanas Saturday fifth, which was a three-year-old and upwards Optional Claiming event over five furlongs straight.
DaCosta started the day $1,439,265 ahead of Nunes and gained approximately $230,000 to add to his tally following the win by Cartel, ridden to victory by Anthony Thomas. Nunes had previously earned by placing fourth and fifth in the second race and with Gentle Giant, who finished third behind Cartel.
In the race itself, Cartel was held of the early pace set by Dee Danger (Raddesh Roman), while Gentle Giant (Tevin Foster), carried the group in the middle of the track.
Cartel increased the tempo inside the last furlong pulling away to win by 8 ¼ lengths. Father Riel (Roger Hewitt) came on late to finish second ahead of Gentle Giant.
