KINGSTON, Jamaica – Pelicula (Oshane Nugent) changed her running style on her third start to be victorious in the Caymanas Saturday second, which was the 7-furlong Abbie Grannum Memorial Cup for two-year-old maidens.
In her two previous outings, Pelicula, a bay filly by Soul Warrior – Milestone, trained by Richard Azan, displayed the tendency of running on. Today, Pelicula after rearing up when the gates opened was sent by Nugent to assume the lead after three furlongs were done with.
Now in the lead, Pelicula was followed by Ha Gow Siu Mei (Shane Ellis), the 4-5 favourite and Eddietwentynine (Christopher Mamdeen).
Nugent went way wide entering the lane with Ha Gow Siu Mei even wider, with both way ahead of the rest of the runners. Ha Gow Siu Mei was then switched to mid-track as Pelicula went further to the outside rails.
Pelicula and Nugent held on strongly to win by 1 ¾ lengths. Ha Gow Siu Mei finished second with Another Brother (Dick Cardenas) filling the third slot.
The winning time was 1:29.3.
